Her father, a musician, walked out when she was just a baby, and her teenage mother, Helene, took her to Newark, New Jersey, where her grandparents and aunt, Johnnie Mae, helped to raise her. Always passionate about performing, she began singing in the local church choir when she was just two years old, going on to perform in several school musicals. After graduating from high school as an honor student, she took up a scholarship at Fordham University studying marketing, but dropped out after just one year to pursue a career in music.
